Arrival is easier when a few small decisions are already made.
Start with the journey
Your first hour usually includes luggage, a ticket machine, a transport choice and finding the accommodation. Make those choices while you are still at home. Save the address and arrival instructions in a form you can access without an internet connection.
Use the official airport, station or transport operator website to compare routes. Check the hours for the day you arrive, not just a typical daytime frequency. If you arrive late, decide what you will do if the final public service is missed.
The details that matter
Check whether tickets must be validated, activated in an app or kept until the end of a journey. Rules vary by city and transport type. Buy from authorised channels, and avoid strangers offering tickets or unsolicited help at machines.
Keep accommodation contact details easy to reach. Let the property know about a late arrival when required, and ask how check-in works outside reception hours. A confirmed booking does not always mean someone will be at the desk all night.
Before you go
Once you arrive, make a short local orientation walk only if you have time and energy. Find a practical food stop and the nearest transport connection. Save major sightseeing for a day when you are not carrying all your belongings.
There is no need to make the first evening prove the value of the trip. Getting settled, eating and sleeping well creates a better start. When the basics are arranged, the interesting part of the city can wait until morning.
