Compare the whole journey, not the first price you see.

Start with the journey

A tempting flight or room rate is only one part of the price of a trip. Add travel to departure points, local transfers, baggage, accommodation charges and the activities you actually want to do. Compare totals for the same dates and number of travellers.

Use a simple list with essential spending and optional spending separated. Include meals, local transport and a reasonable contingency. A budget works better when it reflects your habits than when it assumes you will change everything for the weekend.

The details that matter

Check the conditions attached to the cheapest options. A non-refundable room or restricted ticket may be suitable for firm plans, but expensive if you later need to change them. Compare flexibility alongside price rather than as a detail after payment.

Look at location costs too. Savings on an outlying hotel can be reduced by repeated transport fares and the time spent travelling. On a short trip, easy access may have more practical value than additional amenities you will not use.

Before you go

Prices can change between planning and booking. Keep a record of what is included, the currency, local taxes and any payment charges. Confirm the final payable amount with the provider; this article does not promise a particular saving or current offer.

Decide which part of the trip matters most to you, then put your budget there. It might be a well-placed room, a special meal or an extra day. Thoughtful spending means choosing deliberately, not always choosing the lowest number.

Travel details can change. Confirm current arrangements with the relevant provider. Images are illustrative; this is a planning guide, not a first-hand review.
